The kids and I recently took advantage of an empty day on the calendar to make a day-trip to Yosemite. The trip was almost a non-starter though when I realized we were half way to Yosemite, almost out of gas, and I had forgotten my wallet at home. An emergency credit card I had hidden in my car got us the needed petrol, and after driving home and back again we decided to make the most of the remainder of our day head back toward the park. Tom used his 80th birthday party to bring his Theta Chi brothers together to sing the Dream Girl Song to fraternity brother, Eppie Johnson. I have no idea why, but it’s worth chuckling at.

I thought that on my dad’s 80th birthday it would be appropriate to talk about the greatest dad in the world.
Then I thought, “No I should write about the best public relations guy in Sacramento.”

Here’s the video I put together for my dad’s 80th birthday.  I put a lot of work into it, so I’m guessing I’ll be playing it at his funeral some day.  He guesses the same thing.  He said so.

We’ve been haunting our driveway and front and back yards on and off since 1995, but 2012 was the second year that all the neighbors and a bunch of friends chipped in to help. It’s also the second time we charged an entry donation of two cans of food for the Elk Grove Food Bank. Though we thought (and have said) that 2011 was the peak of this event, (“How could we possibly top that?”) I believe we topped it this year. We raised more than a ton of food for the food bank, and, after having to rebuild several props and a more than 30 walls, pulled off the most successful haunted houses yet. We were open for 4 nights again this year, and we were so popular that people stood in line in the rain for more than an hour to get in.

We’re fortunate to have two huge water parks nearby to help keep us cool. This one’s Sunsplash in Roseville, and it boasts some of the best slides in the area. But for the McClellands and Wassermanns all that matters is that it has water and the occasional shade, and that’s a great combination foor keeping cool in 100-plus degree temperatures.

Patrick: “Daddy, is Scandinavia a real place?” Me: “Yes it is.” Patrick: “What kind of stuff comes from Scandinavia?” Me: “The most beautiful women in the world.” Patrick two minutes later: “Daddy, did mommy come from Scandinavia?” Me: “Yes she did son. Yes she did.”
